A couple of weeks ago, I was privileged to spend a week in Nauvoo and Carthage, IL as a counselor for EFY. These two cities have held a rather prominent place in Latter-day Saint history; Nauvoo being home to a Temple and a refuge from Missourian mobs, and Carthage being the place where the Prophet Joseph Smith was martyred. The Temple was beautiful, being restored almost exactly to match the original that was burned down shortly after the Saints’ departure. The inside housed some of the sacred ordinances of the Gospel that have been restored to the earth. As I visited Carthage jail I was touched by a somber reverence which permeates that place. I saw the room in which the Prophet and his brother made their final stand; the original door which stood between them and the mob still in use. Still visible is the hole made by the ball that would claim Hyrum’s life. I saw the window through which the Prophet would fall, after being shot four times, to his death. A short distance away in Nauvoo, I saw he and his brother’s final resting place, alongside his sweet wife Emma. As I visited these sacred places, I was filled with gratitude for the man Joseph Smith. His sacrifices numberless and his endurance endless, he pressed forward boldly and unwaveringly to finish the work he had been given by God Almighty in spite of the vilest of persecutions and most hateful of crimes against him. I echo John Taylor’s remark that “Joseph Smith, the Prophet and Seer of the Lord, has done more, save Jesus only, for the salvation of men in this world, than any other man that ever lived in it.” This work is true, unapologetically and unequivocally true, and in it we can find peace, light, and joy unending. If you have questions, seek the answer. Seek from Christ, “who knoweth all things,” and as He lives, you will find. Praise be to God for restoring the Gospel to the earth. And praise to the man who communed with Him.
