While the original is superior, with its greater emphasis on character and story, I kinda prefer Vol. 2, mainly because...well, it’s so freaking hilarious!
And yeah, don’t get me wrong-Vol. 1 was hilarious as well, but Vol. 2 cranks the laugh meter up to 11 with its endless (albeit sometimes forced) jokes and hijinks, from Drax’s blunt approach to sensitive topics and Quill and Rocket’s bickering during a space battle (with asteroids, of course), and everyone’s reaction to “TASERFACE!!!!” And that’s just a small fraction.
Set a few months after the first film, Vol. 2 finds Peter Quill approached by Ego, his previously-mysterious father, who takes him, Gamora and Drax to his planet (read: him) and reveals that Peter is part celestial, an ancient being of incredible power. Ego’s Planet/Ego is a beautiful world and, as of 2017 (and maybe still; I haven’t done research), was the single biggest digital effect ever created for film. (Continued in Comments)
