How Blue Was My Sky 2019 001

My first title for this drawing was "Mountainscape with Blue Sky." Then, I remembered the classic black-and-white film, "How Green Was My Valley," and this drawing became "How Blue Was My Sky." I thought that shift was kind of clever. Enjoy the image whatever you call it.

Open Call:

Title: Sky-high Skies

Due: August 15, 2019

Transpace, Normal, IL

Curator: Anthony Hamilton

In The Mushroom at the End of the World, Anna Tsing describes an approach to contemporary capitalist life as a “contamination”: everything is affecting each other, whether productive, intentional or not. Every image submitted will be shown surrounding the theme of the sky to create a complex communal cloud of vision around the subject. From JW Turner’s landscapes to photographs of the West, and the proliferation of sunset imagery on Instagram, the changing sky has become another banal image and a symbol of hope, aspiration, fresh air, the outside, grand space, “freedom,” etc. These collective hopes that are often self-interfering through their vast ambitions. What forms our thoughts of the sky? How are images of the sky reflexive? What is your best picture of the sky?
