user_1253215:Alfa Romeo 156 GTA Sportwagon
3.2-litre V6 producing 247hp and 300 Nm of torque
In GTA form the 156 received a wide track, Brembo brakes, revised steering and of course the main thing that this model will be remembered for – the Busso V6. Regarded by many as one of the best six cylinder engines ever produced. It was a power plant that did it all; it looked beautiful, sounded glorious and had an output to match the aesthetics.
Although later models like the Spider and GTV featured this V6, they were slightly detuned for compliance purposes. Even though the difference is a negligible 10hp, you could say that the 156 GTA and 147 GTA were the last Alfas to receive the full fat version of this engine.
It is very difficult to find the exactly how many Sportwagons were sold in the UK, but all online sources suggest between 100-130 units. This figure is also slightly complicated by the imports that came from other right hand drive markets and the fact that many were broken for parts to feed the Italian market; especially when they bottomed out in price in the UK. One thing is clear – these are super rare and prices have been steadily rising for clean models.
A particular thread on the owners club also taught me something very interesting – despite Alfa Romeo producing a facelift 156 in 2002, they stuck with the pre-facelift for the GTA until production ceased in 2005. Only the interior from the facelift was carried across.
