. “Built of hand-cut segments of high-resolution scans of vintage girls' ceremonial kimonos, Mayumi Lake's blossoming collages cross-pollinate the minute details of a time-honored sartorial custom with historical references to the Japanese Housouge (Hou-sou-gae). These phantasmagorical flower composites of peonies, lotuses, leaves, and fruit were assembled inside temples by anxious worshippers in times of natural disaster and uncertain futures. In her new work, the composition seems to swirl out of control, unable to contain its own chaos, let alone offer solace. Transforming tradition and history with photographic technology and manual processes, Lake foregrounds the labor of her making as she deconstructs the bodily object of the kimono."
